Ban Don is located in Thanh Lam Commune, Ba Thuoc District. According to local legend, the early inhabitants lived scattered, without forming a village. After a period of time, for the convenience of daily life and community activities, they decided to gather together in a place with a water source, which also served as a community gathering point. It is known that in Vietnamese, this is called "tu hop," while in Thai, it means "Don." Therefore, the name Ban Don has been passed down from ancient times to the present day. Located in the center of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Ban Don is one of the few villages that still preserves traditional stilt houses, cultural identity, and customs of the Thai and Muong ethnic groups living in the western part of Thanh Hoa Province. Bản Đôn is home to 80 households with a population of 285 people, including 23 households and a few businesses involved in community-based tourism. With a rich and diverse array of dishes, meticulously prepared from locally available ingredients sourced from the mountains, forests, and streams. Depending on the time and season of the year, there are different dishes. Some typical dishes of the Thai people include grilled fish, bamboo rice, steamed pork, grilled chicken, stone snails, and purple sticky rice. The most popular and beloved dish is the glutinous rice, known for its large, clear, and fragrant grains.

In particular, the area is famous for dishes made from Co Lung ducks - a breed that has become a well-known local specialty and a source of pride for the community. These ducks, with their short necks and low legs, are raised in the streams and fields, which results in firm, flavorful meat.
