Located by the Chu River in Quang Ich village, Xuan Thien commune (Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa), Pho Dam was once one of the most bustling ancient trading streets in Thanh Hoa in the early 20th century. Over the course of time, Pho Dam has lost its appearance as a riverside trading town, but the century-old houses still seem to tell the story of the old Pho Dam. In the past, Xuan Thien was a bustling trade hub, famous for two landmarks: the Dam ferry landing and the Dam market. Initially, with its deep river and gentle shores, Dam market was established on the riverbanks, allowing merchants to travel by boat from various places to exchange goods. Positioned "near the river," it served as a trading point between the mountainous region and the lowlands. The market held six sessions every month, on the 5th and 10th days, and became well-known for its exquisite handmade goods, as well as the forest and aquatic products brought from both the highlands and lowlands. In the past, Xuan Thien was a bustling trade hub, famous for two landmarks: the Dam ferry landing and the Dam market. Initially, with its deep river and gentle shores, Dam market was established on the riverbanks, allowing merchants to travel by boat from various places to exchange goods. Positioned "near the river," it served as a trading point between the mountainous region and the lowlands. The market held six sessions every month, on the 5th and 10th days, and became well-known for its exquisite handmade goods, as well as the forest and aquatic products brought from both the highlands and lowlands. Craftsmanship was also highly developed here, with specialties including bricklaying, dyeing, weaving, tailoring, jewelry making, ceramics, earthenware pots, and tiles.

However, over time, due to various natural and social factors, Pho Damm lost its status as the central hub of the region, and the French-style villa architecture gradually deteriorated.

Currently, Pho Dam has about 30 houses that still retain their original architecture, of which 10 are well-preserved and almost intact. These old houses feature European-style architecture, with two stories and red roofs, constructed with brick walls and lime mortar, and clay-tile roofs that keep the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter. The floors and ceilings are made of ironwood, and the levels of the house are connected by a small wooden staircase. Many of the houses still maintain their original charm, but due to the passage of time, they have deteriorated, leading many families to renovate them while still preserving the original architectural features.
